Low-cost portable fluorescence spectrometer for vegetable oils authentication. 

Vegetable oil authentication often relies on advanced analysis techniques that are relatively time consuming, especially when dealing with fresh products.

We are offering a time, space and cost saving sampling unit. Currently it is mainly focused on vegetable oils analysis, but after the necessary customization could be used in field of fruit juices, wine and milk analysis.

Also, there is a possibility to offer the same device for in-line monitoring for liquid flow up to 1 l/min.

Vegetable oils are the main source of fatty acids, which are predominantly triglycerides (95% - 98%), the remaining (5% - 2%) consists of complex mixtures of minor compounds in a wide range of chemical classes. The proportion of saturated and unsaturated fatty acid has an important role on the behavior of vegetable oils. The degradation of vegetable oil quality is essentially caused by the unsaturated fatty acid oxidation. [1]

Natural antioxidant products exist in vegetable oils to counteract the oxidation process described above. The most important: vitamin E, phenol compounds and carotenoids. Our device is able to characterize vegetable oils and detect the alteration of their quality through fluorescence measurements of the proportion of the oxidation and antioxidant products without any preparation of the sample. Main applications are the followings:

  • Determination of the grade of edible oils
  • Detection of adulterated edible oils
  • Authentication of the manufacturer and source of edible oils

Quantification of fatty acids, antioxidants and chlorophyll

  • Detection of the oil cold/heat extraction method
  • Evaluation of changes in edible oil quality during storage

Our fluorescence spectrometer is a low-cost device, lightweight and portable. It is able to operate with any kind of PC or tablet computer via USB port or wireless via BT. In case of wireless connection, the optional power bank is required.

Application example

In particular, we would like to present the measurement of two samples of high category extra virgin olive oil from two brands. Brand #1 is claiming that their oil has an acidity (pungency) of 0.1…0.2% and brand #2 is declaring acidity of 0.3 %.
Results of the fluorescence, measured with excitation of 365 nm, are presented at the plot. The fluorescence of the Chlorophyll (650 to 700 nm) is more or less the same for both samples, as well as the fluorescence of the antioxidant vitamin E (520…540 nm). This is in good correspondence with manufacturers declarations. At the same time, we can see a significant difference at the fatty acids fluorescence band (440…500 nm).
This difference could be explained by the manufacturer’s declared different acidity: brand#1 has its fluorescence 2.5 times less than brand#2, which is also in good correlation with declarations.

In fact, this example shows that we are able to determine and quantify

also the taste qualities of olive oil.

By the way, the ratio between fatty acid band and the vitamin E band is a good indicator of the oil processing history: cold extracted oils have this ratio significantly lower than one and the thermal oxidation increases this ratio to the value significantly over one. In our case this ratio is about 0.3 for brand#1 and approximately 0.7 for brand#2.  Both are less than 1, which indicates the cold extraction method, which is once again in accordance with manufacturer’s declarations.
